A recent study by engineers at Michigan Polytechnic University shows that the growth in the number of DIY 3D printer users printing toys at home rather than buying them from stores may soon take large profits away from major toy manufacturers.
Researchers focused on how much money a desktop 3D printer can save users. Data show that using 3D printers can save more than $6 million a year in toy purchases. Considering the estimated value of the toy market in 2020 is $135 billion, we can see how much impact 3D printing technology has had on the industry.
According to the survey, compared with buying toys from stores, 3D printing at home can save consumers more than 75% of the cost. If recyclable wire is used, the cost savings can be as high as 90%.
